Hiring: Front-end developer

Elliot Coad Head of Development at Shortlist Media.

We’re working on brilliant things. Friendly, passionate, and inquisitive minds required.

Shortlist Media Ltd (Holborn, London) is a market leading independent publisher who initially made their name with ShortList and Stylist magazines. We are now entering an exciting phase of new digital only launches. This is a fantastic career opportunity to join us as at this stage, we’ll be drawing on our newly formed in-house creative development team to marry up industry-leading editorial, design and technology. We are firmly setting our sights on delivering truly original, creative and fun products.

We’re looking for a brilliant front-end developer to join our growing digital team at Shortlist. Great JavaScript skills, a real understanding of modern front-end best practices and a passion to create fantastic products are great attributes to have. ShortList and Stylist are key brands in our portfolio and we need someone to take the lead on a large swathe of the sub-products they run on: a bespoke story-telling product; a JavaScript app which organises dynamic content from various APIs; a modern ad platform stack; and performance testing and monitoring to ensure our pages are performant across devices and conditions. While you have will some key focuses, you are part of the team of front-end dev roles which will switch around on to other brands and new launches coming up.

About you

  • You’re a great JavaScript developer with experience in ES6 and beyond, comfortable picking up new APIs and working with new technologies. Mastering JS is long road but we just need you to be well on your way!
  • You have good experience with React or similar modern JS frameworks, ideally with server-side rendering, common design patterns and performance.
  • You’ve had experience with writing CSS at scale in a clean, readable and maintainable manner.
  • You’ll have interacted with, and can read, server-side scripting languages like PHP (WordPress) or Ruby (Rails).
  • You have worked on sizeable codebases with multiple contributors, not only small campaigns or micro-sites.
  • You’re comfortable with tools like Git and have worked with common version-control methodologies like the feature-branch workflow.
  • You should know about the critical path to rendering a page and have an interest in tools and techniques to speed up performance.
  • It would be beneficial to have some experience in working with ad code libraries such as Google DFP, however this is just an async JS library that can be taught.
  • You have great verbal and written communication skills, especially with non-technical people. Part of this role will be regularly collaborating with the commercial team to create bespoke long-form content, and you’ll likely be working closely with UI and UX designers so good communication is key!
  • You’ll have at least 3 years experience at a professional agency or working in-house.
  • Lastly, we want you to be very passionate about what you do, and produce the best in class, award winning products!

Working in EC1 with great people you’ll play a key role in relaunching award winning media brands. You’ll be eligible for:

  • Flexible working hours and occasional remote working
  • Possibility of a personal training budget to go on conferences all over the world. Last year the team went to Chicago!
  • Child-care vouchers
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Company pension scheme
  • Adore the latest generation of computer hardware? Pick your own work machine that you work best with
  • Come Friday 4pm you may see some refreshing beverages doing the rounds!

  • With our own events like Stylist Live for Fashion fans, National Burger Day for Burger fans or film premiers and bar openings, there is never a dull moment here.
  • We work hard, launching 19 projects off our own publishing platform in 2016 and plan to relaunch our main titles in 2017, make a name for yourself by joining the team!
